Space Coast Rocket Stage Expected to Hit the Moon Early Wednesday

A Falcon 9 upper stage launched from Kennedy Space Center in 2025 is predicted to strike near the Moon's Einstein crater at about 2:34 a.m. Wednesday.

A Falcon 9 upper stage that left Kennedy Space Center in January 2025 is expected to complete its long trip with an unplanned arrival on the Moon.

Orbital calculations point to an impact at about 2:34 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, August 5, near the lunar crater Einstein. The object, tracked as 2025-010D, is the spent upper stage from the launch that carried Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's RESILIENCE landers toward the Moon.

The impact is not a danger to Earth or to people. For scientists, however, it offers a rare opportunity to compare computer models with a known object striking the lunar surface.

From Launch Complex 39A to a lunar collision

Falcon 9 lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at 1:11 a.m. on January 15, 2025. Blue Ghost carried 10 NASA science and technology instruments as part of the agency's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.

After the spacecraft separated, the rocket's upper stage continued in a distant, looping orbit influenced by both Earth and the Moon. Independent orbit specialist Bill Gray later identified a likely lunar impact and has continued refining the prediction with additional observations.

Gray's current calculation places the impact near the Moon's western limb as seen from Earth. He estimates that the predicted time may be accurate within a few seconds and the location within a few kilometers, but notes that small, hard-to-model forces can still shift both.

What researchers hope to see

A research team modeled the roughly 3,900-kilogram stage hitting at about 2.43 kilometers per second, or more than 5,400 mph. Its July paper has been submitted as a preprint, meaning the findings have not yet completed peer review.

The simulation suggests the impact could throw a broad curtain of dust 15 to 20 kilometers above the surface, with a narrower central spike reaching much higher. Researchers say the plume may be bright enough for specialized ground-based telescopes or spacecraft at the Moon to detect.

Those are model results, not a guarantee of a visible show. The impact point is near the sunlit edge of the Moon, and Gray notes that an earlier rocket-stage impact in 2022 was not observed at the moment it happened. Weather, telescope location, timing and the actual behavior of the debris will all matter.

For casual skywatchers, this is not expected to look like a naked-eye flash. The useful observations will most likely come from astronomers using properly equipped telescopes and from lunar spacecraft that can inspect the site afterward.

One launch, a very long story

The mission's main payload has already had its own successful chapter. Blue Ghost landed on the Moon in March 2025 and completed its planned surface operations, returning science and images before lunar night ended the mission.

Now the stage that helped send it there is giving researchers a different kind of experiment—one nobody scheduled at launch.

If the prediction holds, a piece of hardware that rose over Brevard's coast will create a new, small crater more than a year and a half later. It is an unusual reminder that a Space Coast launch can keep unfolding long after the bright trail disappears from Florida's sky.
