Viera Cookout Thanks First Responders, Nurses and Teachers
One Senior Place's Grilling for Heroes event brought local service professionals and their families together for free food and a family celebration.

One Senior Place turned its Viera property into a thank-you party for the people Brevard relies on during emergencies, illnesses and ordinary school days.
The July 25 Grilling for Heroes event welcomed first responders, nurses and educators—current and retired—along with their families for a free cookout and afternoon of activities.
The gathering paired barbecue with a kid zone, cooling stations, emergency vehicles, music and treats. It was a lighthearted event with a serious purpose: recognizing people whose work is often most visible when someone else is having a difficult day.
A family event built around gratitude
The cookout was held at One Senior Place's Viera location at 8085 Spyglass Hill Road.
Organizers created multiple grilling stations and served sliders and hot dogs, with water and lemonade available in the summer heat. Families also found face painting, cotton candy, an ice cream truck, a DJ, a stilt walker and an inflatable water-play area.
Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office brought vehicles for children to see up close. Prize drawings continued through the event.

Twenty years of helping families find answers
The event came during One Senior Place's 20th year serving Brevard County.
The organization describes itself as a resource center for seniors and their families. Its Viera location brings together information about aging services, legal and financial planning, health care, housing, caregiving and community programs.
Director Angie Higgins told event coverage that the center offers seminars each day, including education from attorneys, insurance professionals and financial experts.
That model is built for families who may not know which question to ask first. Instead of calling multiple organizations separately, residents can begin with one location and learn which services fit their situation.
One Senior Place also hosts social and educational programming, including support groups, senior activities and veterans' gatherings.
Why events like this fit the mission
Grilling for Heroes was not limited to seniors. It extended the organization's community role toward teachers, nurses and first responders while giving their families a place to enjoy the recognition together.
The connection is not difficult to see. The professionals thanked at the cookout are often the same people who help older adults and caregivers navigate emergencies, health changes and daily life.
A free afternoon of food and family activities cannot repay years of service. It can make appreciation visible—and give the community a chance to say it in person.
