Parrish Medical Center Earns National Recognition for Patient Safety Transparency
Parrish Medical Center earned The Leapfrog Group's Full Transparency Badge for publicly completing every section of its annual hospital safety survey.
Families rarely get to see what happens behind a hospital's public reputation. Parrish Medical Center has received national recognition for making more of that information available.
The Titusville hospital earned a Full Transparency Badge from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit that evaluates hospital safety, quality and reporting practices. The badge is awarded to hospitals that complete, affirm and publicly submit every applicable section of the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey.
That makes this recognition less about a single score and more about a hospital's willingness to show the information behind its performance.
What the badge measures
Leapfrog's hospital survey covers a broad set of safety and quality practices. The organization uses submitted data to help patients compare hospitals and understand how facilities approach areas such as infection prevention, medication safety, maternity care and intensive-care staffing.
Hospitals participate voluntarily. The Full Transparency Badge recognizes those that submit the entire survey rather than leaving portions unanswered.
Parrish Healthcare President and CEO George Mikitarian said the recognition reflects a hospital-wide commitment to sharing information patients and families can use when making care decisions. Leapfrog President and CEO Leah Binder likewise praised Parrish for fully participating in the reporting process.

Why transparency matters before an emergency
Most people do not begin researching hospitals until someone is sick, injured or facing a procedure. At that point, convenience, insurance coverage and a doctor's recommendation may shape the decision more than publicly available safety data.
Leapfrog's reporting tools give families another place to look. Readers can search for a hospital, review its available survey information and compare it with other facilities before care becomes urgent.
A transparency badge does not mean every measure is perfect. It means the hospital has agreed to make its complete survey submission available for outside review—and that distinction is useful on its own.
A different kind of patient-safety recognition
Parrish has received hospital safety grades and other quality recognitions in previous years. The new badge measures something more specific: whether the hospital completes and publicly reports the full survey.
That matters because a letter grade and transparency are related but not identical. One summarizes performance. The other tells patients how much underlying information an organization is willing to place in public view.
Parrish credits its employees—called Care Partners by the health system—for maintaining the practices and documentation that make that reporting possible.

Patients can search for Parrish Medical Center and other hospitals through Leapfrog's ratings site. Parrish also maintains an awards and recognition page and information about its quality and safety programs.
The most useful takeaway may be a simple one: hospital safety information is available before the day you need it. Parrish's new badge makes that information a little easier for North Brevard families to find and weigh.
